After 25 years of assessing students at Spectrum Tuition who arrive having used these platforms for months, here’s what each one actually does well, where each one fails, and what parents should use them for.
What’s the Difference Between a Practice Tool and a Teaching Tool?
This is the question no maths website review asks, and it’s the one that matters most.
Practice tools serve questions and check answers. They assume the child already understands the concept and needs repetition to build speed and accuracy. IXL, Mathletics, and Adapted Mind fall into this category.
Teaching tools explain concepts through instruction — video lessons, worked examples, or guided problem-solving. Khan Academy and, to a lesser extent, Mathseeds for younger children sit here.
Neither category includes diagnostic tools — platforms that identify exactly which concepts a child has mastered and which they haven’t. This distinction matters enormously because most parents reach for a practice tool when what their child needs is a diagnosis followed by targeted instruction.

Is Adapted Mind Worth It for Australian Kids?
Adapted Mind ($59.99 USD/year for one child) is a US-based maths and reading platform aimed at PreK–8 students. It uses a video lesson + practice question format with animated characters.
What it does well: The video explanations are genuinely clear for foundational concepts. For a child who missed a topic in class and needs it re-explained, the videos are better than most competitors. The interface is clean enough that children aged 5–9 can navigate independently.
Where it falls short for Australian families: The curriculum alignment is to US Common Core, not the Australian Curriculum. A “Grade 5” level on Adapted Mind doesn’t correspond to Year 5 in Victoria. Fraction topics appear in a different sequence, measurement uses imperial units by default, and the vocabulary (“math” not “maths,” “yards” not “metres”) creates unnecessary confusion.
Honest verdict: Useful as a supplementary explanation tool if your child needs a concept re-taught. Not a curriculum replacement. Not diagnostic. If your child is struggling, Adapted Mind will show you that they’re getting questions wrong — but it won’t tell you why or systematically close the gaps.
Does Mathseeds Actually Teach Maths?
Mathseeds (part of the 3P Learning suite alongside Reading Eggs) costs approximately $119.95 AUD/year and targets children aged 3–9. It uses gamified lessons with animated characters, songs, and reward trees.
What it does well: For children aged 3–6 who are developing early number sense — counting, number recognition, basic addition — Mathseeds is genuinely engaging. The lesson structure is scaffolded, meaning concepts build on each other rather than appearing randomly. It’s one of the few platforms actually aligned to the Australian Curriculum for Foundation to Year 2 content.
Where it falls short: Mathseeds has a hard ceiling. By Year 3–4, the content becomes too simplistic for students working at expected level, and there’s no meaningful extension pathway. Reddit parents frequently note that “Mathseeds alone probably isn’t enough as a full curriculum,” and they’re right — it’s designed as supplementary practice, not primary instruction.
The bigger problem: Parents whose children are 7 or older and searching for “Mathseeds” are often looking for a solution to a problem Mathseeds can’t solve. If your Year 3 or Year 4 child is still working through early Mathseeds content, that’s a signal they may need assessment, not more screen time.
What About Matific for Primary School Maths?
Matific is an Israeli-developed platform used in over 50 countries, priced at approximately $89 AUD/year per child for home users. It focuses on “micro-adaptive” learning for Kindergarten to Year 6.
What it does well: Matific’s strongest feature is its visual representations. Fraction concepts are shown with interactive models, not just abstract numbers. For visual and kinaesthetic learners, this approach can make abstract maths concepts more concrete. Matific is also genuinely aligned to the Australian Curriculum, with content mapped to specific ACARA codes.
Where it falls short: The adaptive algorithm adjusts difficulty, but it doesn’t diagnose why a child is struggling. A student who can’t add fractions might have a place value problem, a multiplication gap, or a conceptual misunderstanding about what fractions represent. Matific treats all errors the same — it just serves easier questions. This is like turning down the treadmill speed instead of treating the knee injury.
Honest verdict: The best of the bunch for Australian curriculum alignment and conceptual visualisation. But it’s a practice and reinforcement tool, not a teaching or diagnostic one. Pair it with proper instruction, and it’s valuable. Use it alone, and it maintains skills without building new ones.
Are Maths Playground, Sunset Maths, and 99 Maths Worth Your Time?
These three platforms serve different purposes, and lumping them together reveals how confusing the landscape is for parents.
Maths Playground is a free US-based website with maths games, logic puzzles, and interactive activities. It’s genuinely fun and develops mathematical thinking through gameplay rather than drill. The limitation: it’s not curriculum-aligned to anything, let alone the Australian Curriculum. Use it for recreational maths engagement, not skill development.
Sunset Maths is an Australian-developed app focused on mental arithmetic speed drills. Think of it as digital flashcards with a timer. For students who already understand their times tables but need to build automaticity (speed of recall), it’s effective and cheap. For students who don’t understand multiplication conceptually, it’s frustrating and counterproductive.
99 Maths is a gamified times tables app used in some Australian schools. Like Sunset Maths, it builds fluency for students who already have foundational understanding. The competitive element (class leaderboards) motivates some children and creates anxiety in others.
The pattern: All three are fluency tools. They make fast students faster. They don’t make confused students less confused.
Why Do Parents Keep Searching for Maths Websites?
This is the question behind the question, and after 25 years of talking to Melbourne parents, the answer is usually one of three things:
Reason 1: “My child’s school isn’t providing enough.” This is often true. Victorian state school class sizes of 25–28 students, with ability spreads of 3–4 year levels, mean individual attention is structurally impossible. Parents sense this and look for something to fill the gap.
Reason 2: “I can’t afford tutoring, so an app is the next best thing.” Understandable, but based on a false assumption. A $120/year app subscription and a structured tutoring program aren’t different price points for the same product — they’re entirely different products. One maintains existing skills; the other diagnoses and closes gaps.
