Sunset Maths builds mental arithmetic speed through timed challenges. 99math turns fact practice into multiplayer competitions. Both keep kids engaged — but engagement and learning are not the same thing. After 25 years of assessing thousands of Victorian students, here’s what gamified maths apps actually develop, what they miss entirely, and when your child needs something more.
What Is Sunset Maths and How Does It Work?
Sunset Maths is a learning app within Essential Assessment, a platform used by approximately 4,000 Australian schools. If your child’s school uses Essential Assessment, they likely have access to Sunset Maths already.
The format is simple: students solve arithmetic problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) before an animated sun sets on screen. Correct answers fill a progress bar. Complete the bar before sunset and earn tokens. The app covers the four operations plus measurement concepts like money, length, and capacity.
Key details parents should know:
- Starting level is set one year below your child’s enrolled year. A Year 5 student begins with Year 4 content. This is by design — Essential Assessment wants students to start with success — but it means early progress can be misleading.
- Teachers control the timer. The sun-setting countdown can be turned off for students prone to maths anxiety, though many teachers leave it on by default.
- Teachers cannot view question-by-question results. They see overall level progress tiles but not which specific problems a student got wrong or why. This is a significant limitation.
- It covers four year levels at a time, then requires a manual teacher reset to unlock the next block. If your child finishes and the teacher doesn’t notice, practice stalls.
Sunset Maths is well-designed for what it does. The problem is that what it does is narrow.
What Is 99math and How Is It Different?
99math is an Estonian-developed platform (winner of Estonia’s 2022 EdTech Startup Award, listed on HolonIQ’s 2024 Nordic Baltic EdTech 50) designed for competitive, multiplayer maths practice. A teacher or parent creates a game, selects a skill (e.g., multiplication by 7s), and students join via a code on their own devices.
Unlike Sunset Maths, 99math is explicitly social. Students compete on leaderboards, earn avatars, and race against classmates or siblings. It’s designed for grades 1–8 and is primarily free, with a “Math Pass” subscription ($13.99/month USD) that unlocks extended home practice.
The strengths are genuine: 99math turns five minutes of fact drilling into something kids will voluntarily do. For families where daily maths practice is a battle, that’s worth something.
But 99math’s scope is deliberately limited to fact fluency — addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division recall. It does not teach concepts, does not cover geometry or measurement, and does not align to the Victorian curriculum specifically.
What Do These Apps Actually Build?
Both Sunset Maths and 99math target one specific skill: arithmetic fluency — the ability to recall basic number facts quickly and accurately.
This matters. A student who has to count on fingers to work out 8×7 will struggle with multi-step problems, not because they can’t reason, but because their working memory is consumed by basic calculations. Research from the University of Melbourne’s Assessment Research Centre suggests that automaticity with number facts frees cognitive resources for higher-order mathematical thinking.
So yes, fluency apps have a place. The question is: how big a place?
In our experience assessing over 10,000 students at Spectrum Tuition, arithmetic fluency accounts for roughly 15–20% of what determines a student’s overall maths performance. The remaining 80–85% involves conceptual understanding, problem-solving strategies, mathematical reasoning, and the ability to apply knowledge to unfamiliar contexts.
A child who can rapidly recall that 12×8=96 but cannot set up a word problem involving area calculation has a fluency strength and a reasoning gap. Gamified apps address the first and ignore the second entirely.
What’s Missing: The Gap These Apps Can’t Fill
Here’s what no gamified maths app currently does:
- Diagnostic depth. Sunset Maths shows teachers a progress tile. 99math shows which facts are “solid” vs “shaky.” Neither tells you why a student is making errors. Is it a place value misunderstanding? A procedural error? A conceptual gap? Without diagnosis, you’re treating symptoms, not causes.

- Conceptual understanding. 99math can drill 7×8=56 until it’s automatic. It cannot teach a student why multiplication is repeated addition, how it connects to area, or when to apply it in a multi-step problem. The Victorian curriculum explicitly requires students to “model and represent” multiplication, not just recall facts.
This gap becomes critical in Year 7–8 when maths shifts from arithmetic to algebra. A student who memorised 7×8 but doesn’t understand multiplication as a concept will struggle when asked to solve 7x=56. We see this transition failure repeatedly — students who were “great at maths” in primary school suddenly struggle in secondary, and the parents are blindsided.
- Victorian curriculum alignment. 99math is designed for a global market. Sunset Maths aligns more closely with Australian standards through Essential Assessment, but its coverage is limited to mental arithmetic and basic measurement. Neither app addresses the full Victorian curriculum scope — including statistics, probability, spatial reasoning, or mathematical investigation — that students are assessed on in NAPLAN (Year 3, 5, 7, 9), PAT testing, or selective entry exams.
- Progression pathways. If Sunset Maths reveals your child is struggling with division, what’s the next step? The app doesn’t prescribe intervention. It just serves more division questions. This is the equivalent of telling a student who can’t swim to “try again” — without teaching them the stroke.
When Gamified Apps Work Well (and When They Don’t)
Use Sunset Maths or 99math when:
- Your child has solid conceptual understanding but slow recall (they know how but need to get faster)
- You need a 5–10 minute daily warm-up routine before structured study
- Your child is motivated by competition and games
- The goal is maintaining fluency over school holidays
Stop relying on apps when:
- Your child has been using them for months with no improvement in school results
- They can answer app questions but struggle with word problems or multi-step tasks
- They’re anxious about timed challenges (Sunset Maths’ timer can be turned off, but the game design still implies urgency)
- They’re in Year 5+ and preparing for NAPLAN, selective entry, or secondary school — these assessments test reasoning, not recall speed
The Speed vs Understanding Trap
This is the observation that 25 years of teaching has reinforced, and it’s not something you’ll find in any app review:
The students who struggle most in Years 7–10 are often the ones who appeared strongest in primary school — because their speed masked gaps in understanding.
A child who breezes through Sunset Maths levels is demonstrating fast recall. That’s genuinely useful. But if you asked that same child to explain why 1/2 ÷ 1/4 = 2, or to identify whether a real-world problem requires multiplication or division, many cannot.

A student might sit in the Fire band (advanced) for arithmetic fluency but the Water band (developing) for mathematical reasoning. Gamified apps would rate this student as “advanced” because they only measure one dimension. Our assessment reveals the full picture.
The apps are not the problem. The problem is treating them as sufficient.
How to Know If Your Child Needs More Than an App
Three signals that gamified practice alone isn’t enough:
1. The “plateau pattern”: Your child’s app scores are high and stable, but school maths results aren’t improving. This indicates the app is reinforcing what they already know rather than addressing what they don’t.
2. The “word problem wall”: Your child can solve 48÷6 in two seconds but freezes when asked, “If 48 marbles are shared equally among 6 children, how many does each child get?” This signals a gap between procedural fluency and conceptual application.
3. The “Year 7 shock”: Your child was confident in primary maths but is suddenly struggling in secondary. This almost always traces back to conceptual gaps that speed-based practice papered over.
